Extended Fitness and Registration

~Update Made on July 20, 2025

No. The current fees will remain the same. Think about it this way: if you have a new vehicle and used to pay $4,500 for one year of fitness, that same fitness certificate will now be valid for five years. A breakdown of the new vehicle fitness validity timelines:

  1. New Vehicle(first time being registered) – 5 Years
  2. 10 Years Old and Younger – 3 Years
  3. Older than 10 Years – 1 Year

Minister Vaz highlighted that the days of having stickers on your car and the paper certificate of fitness will be a thing of the past. The government will be using this opportunity to utilize more technology. The Registration period will be extended to 2 years. You can find the tweet from the Prime Minister here.

This new system will be implemented on July 21st instead of the original July 1st date.

Here are some other announcements from the Minister:

  • People must set an appointment online for the driver’s license exam.
  • Overhaul of the current Demonstration Plate System.

The video below is from the Minister’s prior announcements; however, please note that a newer video, with updated information, was uploaded by Tax Administration Jamaica(TAJ). I have also included that video in this article.

You can watch the Presentation & Demo by the TAJ on July 15th below:

The gallery below has screenshots of the fitness validity period, fitness fees, and the Road Traffic Act 2018.

Note Well: Even if you do not have your phone with your fitness or registration certificate downloaded, the police will be able to check if all documents are valid via the Smart Check System.

Currently, The Republic Post is conducting a survey on Renting in Jamaica. If you or anyone you know rents, please fill out this form or send it to them. Jump to Survey
